Market Square shaping up as Coast's Culinary Epicentre

Market Square, the retail, dining and entertainment heart of Varsity Lakes, is shaping up as the Gold Coast’s newest culinary epicentre with two of its restaurants recently receiving industry accolades.

Krish Indian Cuisine, who chose Market Square as the place to open their third restaurant last year, has won the best Indian restaurant, and Lake Café & Bar was a finalist in the 2009 Restaurant & Catering Queensland HOSTPLUS Gold Coast Awards for Excellence.

Krish was also a finalist for the Best Family Establishment category and will go on to compete for the best Indian restaurant in the State Awards to be held in Brisbane in September.

Krish’s owners, Devi and Narendra ‘Nev’ Prasad, say the award is not just about industry recognition, but also a vote of confidence for the Market Square dining precinct.

“We have two other restaurants, one in Worongary and one in Robina, which are both very popular, however I think it was the combination of the cuisine and location that helped our Varsity Lakes business win the award,” Devi says.

“Our chef, Vikram Singh, has worked in some of the best hotels in the world including the five-star Le Meridien in New Delhi, so diners can expect to experience the very best of Indian food when they visit us.

“Market Square is also fast becoming a dining destination in itself with great local patronage and visitors coming from all over the coast to try our cuisine and the many other restaurants that are gaining a reputation here.”

Daughter Christine and son Krish have both helped the family business to achieve its strong following which includes a steady stream of local Bond University students and members of the Gold Coast’s Indian community.

Krish Indian Cuisine was a runner up in the 2008 awards for Best Indian Restaurant.

Market Square’s Lake Café & Bar was also a finalist in the Best Café Restaurant and Best Chef/Owner Restaurant categories this year after winning both categories in last year’s awards.

The lakefront precinct, likened to the fashionable high streets of England and Europe with its eclectic mix of shopping, restaurants and services, has attracted the attention of a number of new eateries in recent years with a stable of at least a dozen restaurants and cafes now calling Market Square home.

The precinct is also home to a range of banks, a medical centre, chemist, a supermarket, health and beauty establishments, travel agent, homewares, convenience stores and accommodation and conference facilities which all service the 250 plus businesses operating in the local area.
