The Lake Orr based Gold Coast Dragons are in training to compete in the upcoming state and national titles. Coach of the club and dragon boat paddler Ian Peters said his team had the right attitude to succeed. “When we’re out on the water we take it very seriously, we train hard and we compete extremely hard,” said Mr Peters. “With several accredited coaches in the club we have the ability and the people to be able to take [paddlers] to the highest possible level they wish to paddle at.” Mr Peters said he has been involved in dragon boating for 14 years and said he wanted to see more people get involved in the sport. “You don’t have to be specific sport orientated ... we’ve seen people that haven’t been into any sport and of very average fitness end up representing Australia,” said Mr Peters. Dragon boater of 16 years Barry Young said the sport had given him the chance to travel all over the world. “I have been paddling since 1992, I’ve been lucky enough to do a fair bit of travelling with the club...I’ve been to Nottingham, Philadelphia and I’ve been to Asia,” he said.
