An aspiring young fashion designer plans to base herself in Varsity Lakes and showcase her collections to locals.
Despite her age, 18 year old Leah Simcoe said she was determined to become an internationally recognised fashion designer.
Leah said she thought hard work and commitment, perfecting her designs, drawings and sewing would be the key to achieving her goal.
Operating under the business name of Simcoe Designs, Leah said she had just finished her 2009 Spring and Summer collection, which featured a number of dresses made from light and vibrant fabrics.
A Simcoe Designs piece was selected for Sydney Fashion Palette Competition finals in May.
Leah said the competition offered up-and-coming designers the opportunity to work with industry professionals.
“Unfortunately I didn’t win, but it was a really great experience,” she said.
“I loved the networking opportunities … and learning all about what to do next from designers like Mimco and Peter Morrissey.”
Leah said she couldn’t have pursued her dream to become a fashion designer without her family’s support.
Leah’s mother Virginia Simcoe said her daughter had always had an interest in styling and fashion, playing with outfits and sewing machines.
“Leah has always been determined to achieve everything she sets her mind to, a lot of parents wouldn’t approve of a future in fashion but I have witnessed firsthand Leah’s persistence and ability to create gorgeous garments,” she said.
