What Economic Crisis?

By Bond University Journalism student Jacqui Ward.

Many Varsity Lakes residents said discounts offered to encourage spending during the current financial state were successful incentives.
The cheaper prices of flights and accommodation, both domestically and internationally, have encouraged many local residents to make the most of recent price cuts.
Managing director of Varsity Lakes Travel Nic Rone said customers were keen to get the best deals while they lasted.
“People are price-shopping a little more than they ever used to before because they know the bargains are out there,” Mr Rone said.
“It won’t last long.”
In April, Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce published a report stating that some fares had been reduced by 50 percent.
Mr Rone said customers should book through travel agencies to ensure they received the best deals possible.
“I’d never go onto the internet,” he said.
“If you’re booking online, who are you booking through?”
Varsity Lakes resident Brad Clifton said he always organised travel through an agent.
“I’m heading overseas ... [it was] all purely done with our personal travel agent,” Mr Clifton said.
“It’s just more convenient.”
However, other locals said there were bonuses associated with booking through the internet.
Broadbeach resident Angela Luder said she felt she saved time by booking online.
“[Booking online is] easier and more user friendly rather than having to drive down to the actual travel agency and go in there,” Ms Luder said.
Reedy Creek resident Michelle Gill also said she found booking through websites easier and more affordable.
“I’ve found it to be more economical in the past,” she said.
Ms Gill said prices were much more affordable at the moment.
“Globally, prices are cheaper,” she said.
“I have looked at the prices ... and noticed that they are less expensive than this time last year.”
