With the recent jump in temperatures, many Varsity Lakes residents are lapping up the sun and preparing for summer, but only few realise the harsh reality of the sun.
The beginning of November saw the sun come out and temperatures rise to up to 30 degrees Celsius.
Many residents have embraced the weather by spending more time outside, especially at the Gold Coast’s beaches.
Skin cancer survivor and Varsity Lakes resident Laurien Thomas said people are unaware of how damaging the sun can be.
“Everyone loves to be out in the sun all day and relax on the beach, but people need to be mindful of how their health can be affected,” Mrs Thomas said.
“It can happen at any age and any time, so wearing sunscreen should be the biggest priority for everyone.”
International visitor Joshua Sanderson said he came to Gold Coast because of the beautiful weather but rarely considers protecting himself.
“Australia, and especially the Gold Coast, is known internationally for its beautiful weather, so I’m glad I am able to finally experience it,” Mr Sanderson said.
“Wearing sunscreen isn’t usually something I prioritise – either I forget or I don’t plan to spend long in sun so I don’t find it necessary.”
Whilst seeing the sun is a relief for many, the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing continues to encourage citizens to protect themselves when exposed to the sun. |
