Varsity resident awarded exclusive defence placement

A Varsity lakes resident has been awarded a special placement at ADFA (Australian Defence Force Academy) allowing him to complete a business degree and military training.

Current year 12 student at John Paul College Lachlan McAuliffe said he was notified last week of his successful application for the award.
Lachlan said studying at ADFA would enable him to balance his education with his goal of being an Army officer.

“[ADFA] works in conjunction with the University of New South Wales to provide graduates with the knowledge, skills, professional abilities and qualities of characters appropriate to officers in the defence force,” he said.

Lachlan said there was a three stage recruiting process involving aptitude tests, interviews and physical assessments.
“Following the initial aptitude test and medical to assess both physical and intellectual suitability for the position, we also had to complete a session with a psychologist before being referred for a four day leadership weekend in Canberra,” he said.

Lachlan said when he eventually leaves the defence force he hopes to start his own business.  “This award offers a fantastic opportunity for me to concurrently complete my studies and be involved in the Army,” he said.   “I hope to put my tertiary education to good use in the future by hopefully starting a business in the field of sport management.”

Triathlon Coach Mark McGill said he had always seen Lachlan as a natural born leader. “He has the physical and mental capabilities to achieve above and beyond,” he said.  “His qualification for this award is testament to his commitment to both school and sporting activities.”

Lachlan will commence his business studies and military training in Canberra in January.
