Varsity Lakes walks towards better health

By Hannah Harrington, Bond University journalism student

The Varsity Lakes’ Just Walk It group meetings are a highly anticipated social and physical activity members look forward to each week.

Sponsored by the Gold Coast city council and the heart foundation the group meets every Tuesday and Thursday outside Lake Café at 9am.

Not only does it provide the opportunity for a heart pumping hour-long walk, but it does so in a safe and social environment.

Local walk leader of the Varsity Lakes group Sandy Smith thinks the group is a good initiative and motivation for group members: “Many of the members, completed no physical activity before joining the group, it gives them the environment to kick start their health,” she said.

Regular member and Varsity Lakes local Robert Shaw said: “The group got me back into exercise, I didn’t think I could hold to this level of fitness.”

Just Walk It, also provide moonlight walks, which meet out outside Lake Café, , the next is taking place  on 18 June.

Other Just Walk It! Group locations include: Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre, Robina Town Centre, Discovery Park, Tree Tops Shopping Centre, Burleigh Heads and Caravan Park.

Just Walk Me is a similar initiative run by Gold Coast Council, involving dog walking, an essential part of pet health.
