Varsity Lakes resident finishes in Top 10 Of junior surfing

By Jenaya Bodger, Bond University Journalism Student

Varsity Lakes resident Tim Macdonald recently cemented his position as one of the Gold Coast’s top rated junior surfers when he finished 10th overall in the ASP Australasian Junior Pro Series.

Tim held off 172 other competitors from around the Pacific including fellow Gold Coast surfers James Woods and Asher Wales to place 10th in the tour ratings.

The Australasian Junior Pro Series is a breeding ground for professional surfers with competitors coming from all over Australia and the Pacific including Indonesia, Brazil, Tahiti and New Zealand.

Tim, who grew up at Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island, said the 10th position was good but he could do better.

“I haven’t really had any big results recently, I’m just looking forward to what’s coming up next summer,” he said.

Tim is sponsored by the Quiksilver surfing company and works at the Mt Woodgee surf shop.

“All my boards are made by Wayne McKewen at Mt Woodgee, they have looked after me and I couldn't do what I do without Quiksilver,” he said.

Tim, who has competed for Australia in surfing events, said his ultimate goal is to surf professionally one day.

“Growing up on Straddie and watching surfers like Bede Durbidge and Lincoln Taylor really gave me the confidence to believe I could go all the way and surf professionally,” he said.

“Bede has done so well on the tour and they’re both awesome role models.”

Tim also believes in community and helps out where he can.

“I did my Bronze Medallion when I lived over at Straddie,” he said.

“In a place like Point Lookout it’s best to know what to do if there’s trouble”.

Tim is now enjoying some time off on the Gold Coast before heading to Kangaroo Island in November to start his 2012 campaign.

“I have Kangaroo Island and then I’m heading to Hawaii which I’m looking forward to,” he said.

“Travelling does get tiring during the season and it’s always nice to come home, but I’m always excited about leaving again because you know wherever you’re going it’s going to be awesome”.
