Varsity Lakes residents head to the polls (Jack Morphet, Bond University, Journalism Student) Christina Landis, of Anna Bligh’s Queensland Labor party is challenging Ray Stevens MP, the incumbent Liberal National member, who has represented Varsity Lakes since the 2006 election.
Former Gold Coast Mayor, Ray Stevens is currently the Member for Robina as well as the Shadow Minister for Housing Accessibility and Public Works.
Christina Landis, of the ALP, owns the public relations consultancy firm, Future Media Group and is also founder of the online Australian Schools Directory.
Her election message on www.queenslandlaborteam.com states, “If elected, Christina plans to focus on eliminating hooning and providing safer roads, more funding for surf life saving and recreational centres as well as a focus on enhancing community spirit.”
Since the last election, the Queensland state electoral district of Robina has been changed to Mermaid Beach.
This still encompasses Varsity Lakes, with the removal of Robina Town Centre, but now includes increased areas of Mermaid Beach.
Three new urban seats have been created in the south-east, as three rural seats have now been abolished.
The Liberal National Party holds the seat now by a very fragile 2.8 percent, as any figure under 6 percent is regarded as marginal.
Polls will open from 8am to 6pm on Saturday March 21.
However, as the deadline for enrolment has passed, those who are not on the electoral roll will not be able to vote.
The Varsity Lakes community can vote at Varsity College, Christine Avenue or the Varsity Central Sports and Arts Centre, Assembly Drive.
Both locations have full wheelchair access.
