Two instructors helped the children, aged five and up, navigate their kayaks and sail boats on the waters around Varsity Lakes.

Instructor Barry Schmidt said the cold weather had deterred a lot of children from having a go.

“Today has been really very quiet but it’s been really good,” he said.

However, Mr Schmidt said the low number of participants enabled the instructors to focus more on each child.

“We get a chance to chat to the kids,” he said.

Organiser of the sailing and kayaking workshops Russell McClue said they give parents and children the opportunity to relax and have some fun.

“It gives young people and mums and dads and grandparents some time out,” said Mr McClue.

Instructor Schmidt said parents were encouraged to join their children and have a go at sailing and kayaking.

“It’s $10 for the kids but parents can jump in with the kids and have a go for free,” he said.

The sailing and kayaking workshops continue this Saturday at Paradise Point.
