Kate Tanner and Natarsha Butler, Bond University Journalism Students Varsity Lakes convenience stores have implemented policies to reduce theft. IGA Owner Brendan said there were often incidences of theft involving young people in the store. “It certainly is an issue from time to time, but [they] only [steal] inexpensive items,” he said. Brendan said when people were caught stealing he called the police. “When police come to the store it shows thieves that we are serious about combating crime,” he said. NightOwl Manager Stephanie said stealing was not a major issue as her store had policies in place to minimise attempts and used security cameras to identify thieves. “We only allow groups of five school children in the store at a time and all backpacks must remain outside,” she said. Varsity Lakes resident Omar Ahmed said he does not consider youth theft a significant issue. “I think we all go through stages, these children just need to be educated,” he said. Police Constable Kendal Plant said residents need to be aware of the consequences of their actions - criminal records and employment restrictions could be imposed.
