The Wind Up Dolls become a favourite at Hotel CBD

By Anusuya Krishnan, Bond University journalism student

A husband and wife musical duo have become a crowd favorite at Varsity Lakes’ Hotel CBD with three performances in the last two months.

The band The Wind Up Dolls was established earlier last year and has recently recruited their third member Brodie Graham.

Lead singer and bass player Rachel Smith said the band received positive feedback from the crowd every time they played in Varsity Lakes.

“Every time we have played there has been quite a good vibe at the bar,” she said.

The singer said the band is trying to be as diverse as possible to achieve a mixture of genres and CBD patrons seemed to enjoy the variety.

“We do a bit of everything, the last album was a bit of a rock concept album but we actually play a lot more groove-bass stuff, so we kind of mix it around as much as possible,” she said.

Local resident Elliot Harvey said the band was musically distinct and had consistently brought large crowds to watch their shows at CBD.

“I think they’re a really diverse band and when I saw them last there was a pretty big crowd here,” he said.

The band’s lead singer said that despite the bar’s large venue size it has a very personal atmosphere.

“It’s a great venue, there’s a really good vibe in here and it’s got quite an intimate vibe for such a big space,” Rachel said.
