Ninety Varsity Junior College students dazzled audiences with their talent and professionalism in their school’s production of Seussical The Musical Jr last weekend.
The musical was a one-act version of Seussical The Musical which was based on books by Dr Seuss, especially Horton Hears a Who.
Creative Director of Seussical Jr and dance teacher Celia Tapurau said it was the school’s biggest cast to date and comprised students from grade four to six.
“We didn’t want to turn anyone away, so it was a struggle to get all the kids to learn the dances and songs as well as organise costumes but it was worth every moment,” she said.
“Considering it was a full-length musical, these kids were brilliant for their age group and I’m proud of what they’ve achieved.”
Her view was shared by the audience; Information Communication and Technology Teacher Zoe Harlow gave the cast a standing ovation.
“I thought they were brilliant, they were quite professional for their age,” she said.
Lead actor Ben Sullivan, who played the Cat in the Hat, said performing is a passion he pursues both in and out of school.
“I wasn’t really nervous because I do things like this outside school all the time,” he said.
“My favourite part of being in the musical was meeting new people and having a good time.”
The high calibre of the student’s performances can be partially attributed to their curriculum, as performing arts are one of four pillars the school focuses on.
Ms Tapurau said the college is equally dedicated to the arts, academic excellence, sporting excelling and community involvement.
“Every child studies dance, drama and music as part of the curriculum, which is part of what makes Varsity unique,” she said.
