Students chose Fitness First over own gym

Membership at a Varsity Lakes gym is increasing due to student dissatisfaction with Bond University facilities.

Fitness First at Varsity Lakes has had a seven percent rise in student membership in the past year, from 91 to 142.

Membership sales manager Jeff Kranen said students were preferring the timetable flexibility and class variety offered at Fitness First.

Bond marketing student Sarah Warren said the quality of the facilities, the large group classes and the bigger floor space the main reasons why she chose Fitness First over Bond.
“I’ve used the Bond facilities but found that I had to compete for equipment whereas Fitness First is much more flexible and available for me to use,” she said.

Bond architecture student Anna Vallero said while she used the Bond gym for its convenience, she wished it wasn’t too crowded.
“The equipment is really good but quite limited on some days and we often struggle to find a free machine or even floor space,” she said.

Bond University Sports Centre manager Russell Ramsay said the student numbers have continued to rise in proportion with the student population growth at the university.
“This site is a size-nine shoe and we are about a size-ten foot at the moment, the university has grown to that,” he said.
“We are packed and we need more space if we want to keep operating safely and we don’t want quality control to be jeopardised because we are at our maximum.”

Fitness First said they have no plans to add any students programs or packages to their current offerings.
