Stroller group fight to combat baby blues

By Tahnee Woodham and Valeska Halpin Bond University Journalism Students

The Original Stroller Group in Varsity Lakes is taking a natural approach to treating postnatal (PND) depression by bringing mothers, friends and children together while exercising.

According to the better health channel a staggering 80 per cent of Australian women suffer from sudden mood swings, intense sadness and loneliness after child birth.

One in seven of these women will be diagnosed with postnatal depression (PND).

PND affects 50,000 Australian women each year who have recently given birth or miscarried.

Research conducted by Professor Helen Edwards and Kylie Armstrong on the effectiveness of a pram walking exercise program in reducing depression for post natal women found that regular pram walks can reduce PND symptoms and improve fitness levels.

The Original Stroller Group focuses on physical treatment due to the increased levels of serotonin in the brain that is produced through exercise resulting in elevated moods which can counteract PND symptoms.

Local resident and mother Danielle Lees said: “I have heard about the benefits of exercise after giving birth but it was so hard to find a way to juggle the needs of my baby and myself.”

Founder and Personal Trainer of the Original Stroller Group Theresa Wells said: “a post baby program like this helps mothers body, mind and soul. It provides the benefits of keeping mums interactive with each other whilst providing benefits for their physical and mental wellbeing.”

The Original Stroller Group meets 9am every Thursday and costs $5 per session. Contact Theresa wells on 0432 692 131 for further enquiries
