A number of local mums said they were wrapping up another successful session of stroller fitness, a group that combines exercise with socialising and motherhood.

Founder and trainer of the group Theresa Wells said stroller fitness was a great chance for mothers to get fit and meet new friends also with young children.

Since its introduction to the Varsity Lakes community in 2005, the Original Stroller Group has been running year round in five-week sessions, each attracting about 20 women, she said.

“In addition to the physical benefits, the group creates a positive environment and an extra sense of support for new mothers,” Ms Wells said.

“It gives you comfort and peace of mind that your child is with you and safe, while you do something for your personal benefit.”

Ms Wells said the group also sparked family friendships because the children often became playmates through the program.

The workouts are not a stroll in the park - usually consisting of numerous hills, stairs, lunges, squats and medicine balls, she said.

Since the birth of her stroller fitness idea 10 years ago in Sydney, Ms Wells said the program’s popularity had rapidly grown, with multiple groups strolling across the Gold Coast.

The women meet every Thursday morning in front of Delfin House for a three-hour workout.
