The Queensland Special Olympics Sailing Team were very successful at the Special Olympics Australian National Games in Adelaide. The Games provided the platform for Selections to the 2011 World Special Olympics Summer Games in Athens where Sailors will represent Australia. Coach Chris Ruston headed the team that included medal recipients Belinda Hill - 2 Gold, Sonja Gilmore - 1 Gold, Warren Hawkins - 1 Bronze and Adam Knust - 1 Bronze. This Team was the most successful Sailing Team at the Games and this success is to a large degree due to the excellent safe conditions afforded at South Bay Varsity Lakes, there are no large high speed water craft traversing the course, kite boards, jet skies, sand banks that distract Sailors from instructions of the Coach. Of course the Team also train at Southport Yacht Club, TSS and Moreton Bay Yacht Club where the conditions above may provide the required mirror of venues to be encountered at Regattas ,all very much part of modern coaching plans. Chanel 7 Creek to Coast with Kimberly Busteed, as part of the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show promotion, recently shot film of the Team in full training mode at South Bay, this is expected to be seen on May 16th.
Members of the Team will be attending the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show at their display in the village and would welcome a visit.
