Solmac Construction Dedicated to Keeping the Water Clean

By Brian Siegel, Bond University Journalism Student

Solmac Construction is conscious of maintaining environmentally friendly practices on their new site in Varsity Lakes, behind Market Square.

Over the past week, the increased rainfall has heightened the workload of Solmac Construction employees as it needed to be carefully drained from the site so construction could continue.

Site Manager Paul Miller said he supervised the drainage to ensure the rainwater which was drained contained nothing that might harm the environment when it was pumped into an adjacent duck pond that connects to Lake Orr.

β€œI am here all the time and I can see if anything is happening,” he said.

Miller said the water which is pumped out is monitored 24-7 by a treatment plant that modifies the PH and Oxygen levels.

β€œIt runs electronically back to the laptop and if anything goes wrong it shuts down, it rings my mobile phone and we come out and test it, check it,” Miller said.

After the rain subsides, the pipes have to be dried out onsite to make sure that all of the residual chemicals are dissolved before they can be used again.
