More than 250 skateboards are expected to attend the final Varsity by Night event at the Varsity Youth Precinct on February 26.
With free food, music and entertainment, it’s sure to be a big night. Varsity’s rising star 18 year old Aimee Massie has been a regular at Varsity by night and said it’s sad it’s only on for a few months. Sponsored by Slush Puppie and with national titles up her sleeve, she’s been a mentor to the younger local, fellow skaters that attend Varsity by night. “I’ve been skating with these kids since I was about 12 years old, I think we’ve got a cool bond here and Varsity by night brings us all together, it’s cool, it’s a good event,” Aimee said. The program started with funding from the Department of Communities and is now a joint venture with Gold Coast Youth Service, local police, community members and Gold Coast City Council. Senior Active Parks Officer Samantha Hughes said with such a great support, the kids are able to socialise in a safe, drug and alcohol free environment. “We get a great turn out and the kids seem to really enjoy themselves,” she said.
