A variety of free safety activities were hosted by Varsity Lakes Community Ltd over the past week as they demonstrated their commitment to safe communities during the 2009 Safe Work Australia Week from October 25 - 31.

Olympic Road Cycling Champion Sara Carrigan was on-site Wednesday October 28 to conduct a bike education workshop, and Volunteering in Police gave locals some helpful advice on safety in the home and car.

Safe Work Australia Week is a national initiative highlighting workplace safety issues with the aim of encouraging all working Australians be aware of safety in the workplace to help reduce death, injury and disease.

Varsity Lakes Community Limited chairman Peter Cummins said safety should be a top priority in every community.

“We feel that educating people on the safety measures they can take in their everyday lives can really make a difference, and we are committed to creating the safest community possible,” Mr Cummins said.

“Varsity Lakes Community Ltd extended Safe Work Week beyond the workforce to embrace the whole community, hosting a variety of free workshops from Sunday to Saturday with useful tips for everyone.”

According to Australian Government’s Safety and Compensation Council statistics more than 140,000 Australians are seriously injured at work every year and more than 250 die as a result of work-related injuries.

“These are figures that we must reduce, and improving workplace and community safety does not need to cost a lot of money or take a lot of time,” he said.

“Small things like being aware of safety procedures and looking out for one another when at work can make all the difference in keeping everybody safe.”
