Run For Fun Excites Maddie

Varsity College Student
Maddie James.

Leading junior athlete and Varsity College student Maddie James will be taking to the track as a participant in the Varsity Lakeside Run For Fun in May.

The Year 12 student and rep hockey standout is an accomplished competition runner who usually specialises in middle distance events.

“Everyone at school is excited to have a fun run at Varsity Lakes and most of my friends will be either running or volunteering”, James said.

“The event is going to be good timing for me personally as I test my fitness levels going into the competitive hockey season”.

James, 16, is currently training for optimum fitness in the lead-up to an Australian schools hockey tour to Europe mid-March with matches against national squads from Germany, France and Belgium.

As a long-time Burleigh Hockey junior, James has set her sights on continuing to make national teams and gain a scholarship to Bond University to study journalism once she has finished high school.

James added, “I love coming to school at Varsity and having an opportunity to attend Bond after I graduate later this year would be real a buzz”.

For the first time the Varsity Lakes community will play host to a large scale suburban sporting event in the Run For Fun on Sunday 22nd May.

Supported by Lend Lease and Bond University, the Run For Fun will feature a 9km run, 5km walk and 1km kids run.

The 8.5km course will incorporate an out and back run along the lakeside boardwalks and running trails of the Varsity Lakes precinct including the Azzurra Island loop.

The race will start and finish at Central Park and a number of family activities will be on offer including fitness testing, treasure hunts and face-painting.

A highlight of the day will be an inaugural Paparazzi Run, a sprint race guaranteed to capture the imagination of racegoers and local media outlets.

Early-bird registration is now available and can be purchased at Varsity Lakes Community Bank or online at www.varsitylakesonline.com.au/runforfun
