A number of local fishermen have expressed concern over the amount of rubbish found in and around Lake Orr. Robina resident Mick Smith said although he was upset about the amount of rubbish, it would not discourage him from fishing in the local waterways. “Fishermen leave their fishing hooks and lines, with cracked beer bottles,” he said.
“It just upsets you.” Mr Smith said he did not think there was much anyone could do to eradicate rubbish. “People are never going to stop fishing here unless there prosecuted,” he said.
“I suppose they can put a few rubbish bins around, so that people may use them.” Miami resident Leigh Morris said he came to Lake Orr three or four times a week to fish. Mr Morris said he thought it was disappointing people did not clean up after themselves and properly dispose of their rubbish. “Some bins would be nice,” he said.
“There aren’t any bins around so people tend to just leave their stuff around.” Lake Orr is connected to the Gold Coast Canal system, which mixes fresh and salt water.
