Main Roads Queensland said they would not fix dangerous bus stops along Reedy Creek Road until a major upgrade to Reedy Creek Road and Bermuda Street intersection was complete.
Varsity resident Des Viscose whose children attend Marymount Christian College said she was worried about children who used one of the bus stops to get to the school.
“I no longer allow my kids to use the stop because it’s simply too dangerous,” she said.
“You’ve got a two lane road that is an 80km zone, and there isn’t even a proper bus stop there, and where the bus does stop is thirty meters away from where they can safely cross at the lights.”
Service Planning Officer of Transit Australia Group Alan Cavanagh said Surfside bus lines had made complaints about the stops to the Main Roads department, but were told nothing could be done until the Bermuda Street intersection upgrade was complete.
“The upgrade probably won’t be finished for another two years,” he said.
“The only solution would be to lobby the State Member for the area who will in turn refer to the Main Roads and Translink, but safety and funding will be the major hurdles so I wish luck to anyone who does.”
Main Roads Director for the south-coast region Andrew Cramp said the upgrade would include widening some of Reedy Creek Road.
“We are widening a stretch of Reedy Creek Road down from the Bermuda intersection which will allow the space needed for the bus stops, but at the moment the room just isn’t there,” he said.
Mudgeeraba state member Ros Bates said she was aware of the situation along Reedy Creek road but did not know one of the bus stops was directly opposite the school.
“I will look into it further, but the fact of the matter is we can’t put bus stops in until the road is widened.”
