Residents feel safe in Varsity

Residents of Southlake Drive in Varsity Lakes say they feel safe and part of a strong community despite a police drug raid on their street during the early morning of May 25.

Neighbours watched as a nearby home was searched by police and a father of two was arrested and later charged with drug-related offences.

Nearby resident and new mother Sonja Walker said she felt indifferent that a drug lab was operating on her street, maintaining that she and her family continued to feel safe.  “I was only surprised that it was a family home, I don't feel unsafe to go outside at night,” she said.
“There are a lot of people who rent in this street and from time to time you can hear a few drunk people outside, but mostly we’re oblivious to it.”

Neighbours Stephen Bishop and Jo McEwen were unaware of the raid and said that most residents are friendly people that positively contribute to the community atmosphere.

Miss McEwen said the incident did not reflect the character of this family-orientated street.  “I have lived in far worse streets with community housing," she said.  “There’s always going to be a few shady people anywhere you live.”

Mr Bishop said the neighbourhood is usually very quiet.  "Lots of people come and go, but they don’t really bother us,” he said.

Varsity resident Sam Ballentine said he will continue to walk his dog down Southlake Drive despite the recent raid.

Police stations operate in Broadbeach, Robina and Burleigh Heads and a police spokesperson from Burleigh said they maintained a strong presence in the area.
Varsity Lakes is known for its strong community spirit, and Delfin frequently run community events in the neighbourhood.
