A competitive game for dogs was introduced to local canines at Varsity Lakes for the Gold Coast Pet and Animal Expo last month.
The game, Flyball, is played like a relay where dogs have to jump over hurdles and collect a tennis ball before the next dog begins racing.
The first competition of Flyball on the Gold Coast was organised by Awesome Pawsome as part of the pet and animal expo. Team President Brian Moore said he had been training dogs for six years.
“We’re trying to spread Flyball across Queensland,” he said. “We also participate because the dogs absolutely love it.”
Awesome Pawsome team member Joanne Parkes said the dogs train at Mount Gravatt, but they hope to form a flyball team on the Gold Coast.
“We’ll start a team here to generate some interest in flyball on the Gold Coast,” she said. Team member Marcus Hold said any breed of dog could participate in flyball.
“The jumps are determined by the smallest dog’s height,” he said. “The club has four of the fastest dogs in Queensland and one of the fastest dogs in Australia.”
The competition ran over two days with the Champions Trophy awarded to Awesome Pawsome division two. For more information about Flyball visit www.flyball.org.au.
