Please look and Slow Down

A number of Varsity Lakes residents have expressed concern over drivers not adhering to speed limits.

Speed limits differ in the area between 20 and 60 kilometres per hour.

Varsity Lakes resident Naomi Atkinson said speed limits in the area were not clear enough.

“I believe that people are unaware of the speed limits in the Market Square area, thus some drivers speed,” she said.

“It is especially dangerous because Market Square is filled with pedestrians and shoppers including schoolchildren from Varsity College nearby.”

Another Varsity Lakes resident Daniel Pete said people driving beyond the legal limit were endangering themselves and other members of the public

“I have noticed cars not slowing down when necessary, particularly in University Drive, their speeds are dangerous for everyone around the area,” he said.

Some residents also expressed concern over the lack of pedestrian crossings, especially around the local secondary school.

Parent and Varsity Lakes resident Dawn Worboys said without pedestrian crossings drivers would not be actively looking for children crossing the road.

“My son, with a hearing and vision impairment, almost got hit by a car a while back,” she said.
