A local Pink Ribbon Morning Tea marked October’s breast cancer awareness campaign throughout Australia. Owner of Varsity Lakes business Cake Media HQ Brooke Farmer decided to make raising awareness an annual event after her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. Mrs Farmer and her husband now promote a breakfast tea each year to raise funds for the Pink Ribbon Foundation. They hope to collect $5,000 this year’s fundraising activities and corporate support. Mrs Farmer said it was important to support the research aimed at finding a cure. “The scientists can find the cure for cancer. All of their time and money go toward that so we can support them by donating money,” she said. National Pink Ribbon Day is October 27th and throughout Queensland last year’s efforts raised over $400,000 toward cancer research. According to the Cancer Council of Queensland 1 in 11 Australian women will develop breast cancer by the age of 75 and 2500 die from the illness each year. Such devastating statistics make supporters like Mrs Farmer even more determined to further the cause of the Pink Ribbon Foundation. “They make it so easy for people to help, to support them,” said Mrs Farmer. “I want to encourage people to raise awareness to everyone that they can.”
