Parents debate nutrition of school food

(By Sophia Grundy - Bond University Journalism Student)

Growing concerns among parents at Varsity College has brought to light issues with the canteen menu’s healthy options.

Varsity College provides both healthy and fast food options on their menu but the fast food options are much more affordable than the healthy alternatives.

A parent from Varsity College, Lauren Mendle, said she understood why parents are more inclined to just give their children money.

“Sometimes it is just easier to leave some money on the table instead of packing a lunch,” she said.

“I know my children and if they can buy two sausage rolls instead of one sandwich of course they are going to go for the sausage rolls.”

Bond nutrition and exercise science student Stiina Anderson ighlights the importance of tackling these issues with children and unhealthy eating at a young age.

“If schools are allowing this type of fast food to be consumed on a daily basis what hope do children have in understanding the right foods to consume?” she asked.

Assistant convener at the canteen, Jenny Bosker, said: “We try to make the healthier options as cheap as possible.”

“We offer a variety of healthy options like sandwiches, sushi, wraps, yoghurt and fruit.”

“We don’t use butter on our sandwiches and offer no soft drinks. All the hot food is reduced in fat and meets the criteria requirements.”

“(But) kids will be kids and we can’t control their eating habits. We try our hardest  to offer healthier alternatives that are hopefully at a reasonable price for the children.”
