Paddling for Samoa

(By Lauren Madsen, Elise Sargent and Sarah Russo - Bond University Journalism students)

The Gold Coast Dragons hope to raise $1500 for the Samoan tsunami victims at their regatta on Sunday.

An earthquake measuring at 8.0 on the Richter Scale triggered the tsunami that killed hundreds and left many more critically injured when it struck the South Pacific region in September last year.

Event coordinator Janine Lette said they decided to raise funds for victims as two members will be travelling to Samoa in February.

“Our club president Kylie Bade-Peters, and coach Ian Peters, have fallen in love with Samoa and have holidayed there three times in about 12 months,” said Miss Lette.

“Kylie and Ian will be taking the money raised with them when they go and donating it to a village when they are there.”

Nine clubs were expected on Sunday consisting of 22 people per dragon boat, Miss Lette said.

“This is a great sport that anyone from 12 onwards can do,” she said.

“Also what other sport is there that mum, dad and the kids can all be in the same boat.”

The event starts at 9.30am at the Varsity Lakes Community Hall parkland on Christine Avenue, with the first race beginning at 11.15am.

Donations can be made on the day or by contacting Janine Lette at events@goldcoastdragons.com.au
