The Bond University post office will close and relocate to a Varsity Lakes premises in the next three months.
The new post office will be located in the Market Square precinct.
Bond University vice-chancellor Robert Stable said over 85 per cent of people who have post boxes at the current location were not involved with the university and the new location would be more convenient.
“The post office was put on campus at a time when there was nothing anywhere near the university,” he said.
Varsity Lakes resident Tara Castellan said locals had wanted a post office in the area for a long time.
“I think that Varsity Lakes needs a post office because it coins itself as a new thriving metropolis on the Gold Coast and what kind of metropolis doesn’t have a post office,” she said.
Local graphic designer Cliff Smith said a post office would be beneficial for businesses in Varsity Lakes.
“We have lots of outgoing posts ... having an Australia Post [office] would be great,” he said.
“We have lots of clients that always ask us ‘is there a post office here in Varsity Lakes’ and we have to send them off to Robina.”
Professor Stable said the new facility would be a full post office, in contrast to the partial post office currently located at the university.
