The Australian government passed a law restricting people who are under 18 from using solarium services earlier this year.
A vox pop of local Varsity Lakes residents and businesses was conducted and many said the new law was a sensible and safe move.
Owner of Varsity Lakes’ beauty salon It’s All About Me Tara Varley said the new laws were a necessary precaution, despite the impact they had on businesses. “I think that it’s realistic and I think that it’s important to make sure that we’re protecting our young kids from over exposure to the sun,” she said. “It has infringed on business, but I think it’s a necessary infringement.”
Varsity Lakes pharmacist Andrew Halec said solariums could pose a health risk to all users. “The light they produce is pretty strong compared to the sun,” he said. “I’d consider them dangerous.”
Varsity Lakes’ resident Lindsey Delarue said the restriction showed good initiative because she had seen the negative effects of solarium usage. “The laws are useful because I have had friends that did use the solarium [before they were introduced] and they did over do it,” she said.
However Varsity College student Amelia Stone said she was not pleased with the new age restriction and did not consider solariums to be dangerous. “I don’t see the problem, I’m nearly eighteen anyway and I want to be tanned all year.”
