Boxercise, a high intensity boxing class, brings out the Varsity Lakes Mums looking for an hour of stress busting and cardio led by instructor Michelle Woodward.
Boxercise takes place at the North Shore lake every Tuesday at 6pm. For the price of $10 per class, Boxercise provides a rigorous cardio workout that is unlike typical instructional gym class.
Ms Woodward, Boxercise instructor and boxer with six years of experience, has found the biggest turnout of people for her class are a few men but mostly working mums looking to de-stress and pack a high intensity workout into their busy schedules.
“I have had AFL players that have done this class that can't cope through it and then a mum of three kids come along who breezes through it,” said Michelle.
Susie Abrahams, mother of two, has attended the class for two years after she had her first child.
She finds it to be the most motivating and physically effective workout class she has tried.
“Michelle changes it each week and keeps it interesting. I just find coming to her class I am much more motivated than going to the gym and getting on a treadmill,” said Susie.
Although Boxercise is a rigorous workout, Michelle believes that you can participate at any skill level.
“The beauty of it is that you can actually come into and work at whatever level you can. What you put in determines what you get out of it,” said Michelle.
Boxercise changes each week, but always incorporates the different structures at the park into each workout.
By using partners, Boxercise sets itself apart from standard gym classes or personal training.
“In Boxercise you’re in a group environment so you are motivating each other and your partner is motivated to work as hard as you are working. That what makes it stand out,” said Michelle.
Boxercise has grown in popularity over the past four years, initially starting out with only two women and now reaching up to 24 participants, which is the most Michelle will allow. For more information call Michelle at 0410 656 197.
