Market Square’s world of flavours

By Sun Hae Park, Bond University Journalism Student

Many Varsity residents visit Asian restaurants in Market Square due to the popularity of Asian dishes in Australia.

According to research from Australian business research firm BIS Shrapnel, more than 20 per cent of restaurants in Australia serve Asian dishes.

In Market Square, there are seven Asian restaurants among 17 different kinds of restaurants.

Varsity resident Tracey Baker has Asian meals at least three times per week.

“I usually come to Market Square and have some Asian dishes,” she said.

“Of course I love them because I think Asian foods are healthier and cheaper than others.”

Bond University English Language Institute student Shoko Kashiwagi visits Asian restaurants twice a week.

“Asian dishes remind me of my hometown,” she said.

“I like to eat Asian dishes in Market Square with other Asian friends.”

The Gold Coast city is the most culturally city diverse in Australia; over 25 per cent of people were born overseas.

‘101 Restaurant’ is one of the popular Asian restaurants in market square and it provides several sorts of Chinese dishes.

“I think Asian foods are popular in here because many Asians came here long time ago,” staff member Sally Sun said.

“However, Asian customers from overseas as well as local residents frequently visit our restaurant.”
