Varsity Lakes locals said they would rather support small cafes and restaurants instead of large food retail outlets when it came to eating out.
Varsity Lakes resident Elizabeth Skewes recently moved to the area after living in a rural community for most of her life.
She said the small cafes at Varsity Lakes gave her a sense of belonging and reminded her of where she grew up.
“I go for walks on a daily basis and I like that I can enjoy a coffee at my local café and build a relationship with the people at the café,” she said.
“I don’t think I’d get that if I went to McDonalds every day.”
Robina butcher Lawson White said when he visited Varsity Lakes, he also preferred to support the smaller eating and drinking venues.
“I find it more beneficial to eat out at small businesses because I feel they put more back into the community rather then places like Maccas or Subway,” he said.
According to a survey by OK Travel, 11,796 people call Varsity Lakes home, compared to 19,181 in Robina.
