Lakes children receive a gift for the school holidays

By Edward Fleetwood, Bond University journalism student

Children of Varsity Lakes have been gifted with a new playground.

Around $40,000 from the 2011/2012 Gold Coast City Council Budget has been allocated towards a new play area at Central Park.

The students of Varsity College will be the primary users of the playground.

Councillor Jan Grew said the process was underway to build the playground.

“We have allocated funds and are now awaiting a final plan from the designers,” Cr Grew said.

Varsity Lakes local Jane Blake said that her children, who attend Varsity College, would enjoy having a new playground.

“I think that students would definitely use the equipment," Mrs Blake said.

“An obstacle course for the older age group of children would be the best type of playground.”

Locals have noticed that children do not use the park outside school hours.

Jetts personal trainer Wade Grintell, who uses the park for workout sessions, said that he doesn’t see many children at the park.

“I haven’t seen many children in the park when school is out so having a playground will encourage them to be active,” Mr Grintell said.

The playground will be for Varsity College students to use during their lunch break and for the public outside school hours.
