Lake Orr is Our Playground

By TESSA COCHRANE AND HAZEL VILLA, Bond University Journalism Students

Of the many recreational activities available, walking, cycling, and fishing are the most popular, according to our local residents.

Varsity Lakes resident of eight years, Paulette Cavanagh, said people venture out on both weekends and weekdays to engage in their favourite activities near the lake.

“Every morning you see people cycling or walking along the boardwalk,” she said. Hiking and bike trails at Varsity Lakes measure up to 20 kilometres, criss-crossing the town centre and the various villages.

Daniel Freudman, a new Varsity Lakes resident, said the tracks were definitely an attraction which he’d already been on a few times.
“It’s a great way of meeting other people on the same trails as well as a chance to relax,” he said.

Fishing is another recreational activity that 14-year-old resident Jordan Rapata loves to do by the bridge behind Bond University.
“The best times to fish is between 6am to 10 am and 2pm to 5pm when you get to catch more than 10 kinds of fishes,” said Jordan.

Those interested in kayaking, recreational sailing, and boating are not left out, with an 80 hectare expanse of lakes and waterways.
The Reserve resident, Ben Baines, said he thought Varsity Lakes catered well to active people like himself.

“I can walk, run, cycle, kayak; there’s a whole list of possibilities,” he said.

Delfin House also runs weekly recreational or sporting activities which members of the community are encouraged to attend.
