Thirty-three children, ages 5 to 14, attended Kids Cook on September 25, an event held to promote healthy eating habits in a fun atmosphere.
The session, held at Varsity College, was part of the school holiday program designed to keep kids active while they were not in school.
The class emphasised a different aspect of healthy living beyond physical activity, empowering young people to take health into their own hands.
Local resident Ingrid Eksteen said she wanted her son to participate to have fun, try out new recipes and stimulate his interest in food.
“It’s more interesting when you’re with other children, it’s a fantastic opportunity to explore new foods,” she said.
Another local mother Pamela Yates said she hoped the event would add to her daughter’s dream to become a chef.
“She loves to cook, and cooking with people her own age gives her more confidence,” she said.
“The school holiday program is just brilliant.”
Participants used fresh vegetables and different forms of protein to create sushi sandwich rolls, chicken tacos and apricot balls, all of which they were able to take home to enjoy.
The event walked the children step by step through instructions and promoted teamwork, following directions and sanitation.
Coordinator Sheridan Buchanan said the purpose was to teach kids how to prepare healthy snacks at home using products they already have. She added classes usually sell out a month beforehand.
