Jet Skis on Varsity canals cause problems for residents

(By Sarah Russo and Elise Sargent - Bond University Journalism Students)

Jet ski riders are being urged to consider residents after recent reports that the associated noise could be heard throughout Varsity Lakes.

A number of local residents said the noise level from the jet skis had grown recently.

Councillor Jan Grew said jet ski riders using the canals needed to be considerate of local residents.

“Jet ski riders need to be mindful and to consider others especially early in the morning,” she said.

“It’s also important that they flush the jet ski engine at home rather than revving it after use near residences.”

Varsity Lakes resident and jet-ski rider Matthew Wrathall said the noise of engines being flushed was particularly frustrating.

“It’s irritating especially in the morning, the noise can ring through the whole house,” he said

“I understand that people want to ride the jet skis, but they could be mindful of local residents especially lately when a lot seem to be going past,” he said.

Councillor Grew said there was a council jet-ski-etiquette which people needed to keep in mind to ensure a balance between riders and residents.

“It’s important that the riders are considerate of local residents, but also important the residents respect the rights of jet skiers to have fun,” she said.
