Ink on the body and the mind: Varsity Lakes follows the tattoo trend.

Despite reports that tattoos are back in fashion a recent study found they were still considered by many to be socially unacceptable.

True Tattoo owner Tribal Mike said he has had a steady flow of regular customers since opening his business last February.

“I get most of my business through word of mouth and many of my customers are regulars,” he said.

A report late on www.news.com.au in January suggested tattoos were back in fashion with teenagers.

Tribal Mike said new customers came to the store every day, but would not tattoo anyone under the age of 18.

“Many underage kids attempt to get tattoos,” he said.

Mike said, the laws were strict and they were thorough when checking identification.

Tattoo lover Jason Matson, 39, said he had his first tattoo in his early twenties and has been addicted since.

Mr Matson said it was his first visit to True Tattoo and he was having a phantom from the comic strip tattooed.

“I have spent about $1500 on my tattoos so far,” he said.

“It is an expensive thing to have done, but definitely worth the money.”

However Research organisation UMR has found that many Australians were still turned off by tattoos.

The report found 55 percent of the 1000 Australians surveyed thought tattoos made a person ‘less attractive’.

Brisbane resident Samali Donnellan said she disliked tattoos and thought they were a fad.

“Tattoos are an attempt for people in society to make themselves feel better about the way they look instead of changing something in their lives,” she said.
