A local church is reaching out to Varsity College female students in an attempt to make a positive impact on young lives in the community.
Volunteers from the Shine program, run by Hope Church, meet with year nine girls each week to promote three main life values - worth, strength and purpose.
Shine coordinator Jane Schweitzer said the volunteers meet with a group of 10 to 20 girls during the school’s lunch break to develop practical life skills.
“We teach them things like hair and make-up and other beauty skills,” Ms Schweitzer said.
The Shine program also teaches nutrition, decision-making, self-esteem, having a plan and creating a vision to achieve dreams, she said.
Ms Schweitzer said it was all about showing girls how to be more confident in the things they do, building confidence for life.
She said the school had recognised the worth in the students attending the Shine program, which was in its fifth year.
The program usually runs for seven to eight weeks, four times a year, with a graduation celebration at the end of each term.
