A local Varsity Lakes resident aims to raise $10,000 for a Kenyan orphanage by December.

Griffith University student Danielle Baillie said the money would be used to purchase beds for children and help clean up the maternity ward at the Fiagowah orphanage in Kenya.

“The orphanage needs at least 40 new beds, which cost $110 for a bunk bed, mattress, sheets, and the pillow…my fundraising goal is to ensure every child has a bed,” she said.

Danielle said at present there were about five children per bed, a fact which she is hoping to change by raising enough money to purchase a bed for each child.

Cocktails and Dreams nightclub have donated the use of their venue on November 21 to help Danielle reach her goal.

Tickets to the fundraiser are on sale for $10 which includes entry and a $20 drink card.

Many Varsity Lakes businesses have donated prizes which will be raffled off during the night.

Danielle said people could purchase raffle tickets even if they were not planning on attending the event.

"I will contact the winners who were not present at the event, this will provide more than one option for people in the community to get involved," she said.

A local hospital has donated medical supplies to help raise the standards of sanitation in the maternity ward.

This is Danielle’s second missionary trip to Africa in the past two years.

Danielle and sixteen other volunteers from “Caring Hands in Kenya” will depart for Kenya on December 5 to improve the quality of living for children in Kenya.

“I was so lucky while growing up, it has made me want to give the kids in Africa the same opportunities I had as a child,” she said. If you are interested in buying raffle tickets or simply making a donation contact Danielle at 0404636208 or email Danielle_baillie@hotmail.com.
