A Varsity Lakes church is planning to provide support for indigenous people in central Queensland in a mission trip from October 20 to 23.
After three years of building relationships, Hope Church has been offering advanced children’s programs to Woorabinda’s indigenous community since the beginning of this year.
Activities include singing, storytelling and crafting as well as providing community meals.
Organiser Pastor Janine Allen was excited about this development.
“There is a need in the community for second hand clothing,” she said.
“And we are very thankful for regular donations from the Varsity Lakes community, which help us in raising money for the program.”
Groups of three to 14 people have been going on mission trips to Woorabinda every six to eight weeks since 2007, selling clothes to the local community where the nearest clothing shop is more than two hours’ drive away.
Varsity Lakes resident Daniel Cowburn said he donated clothes twice.
“I do not have enough time to go to Woorabinda to support the local people,” he said.
“But I am happy to give something to the community by donating clothes, which I would otherwise just throw away.”
