(By Courtney Patching, Bond University Journalism student.) Over 14,000 people participated in the five different Gold Coast Marathon events, held in Southport on July 5.
Fifteen group members from Fitness in Numbers participated in the 10 kilometre and half marathon events.
Varsity Lakes resident and Fitness in Numbers owner John Polson said he established the business at the start of the year, but had been a personal trainer for four years.
“I suppose the most rewarding part has been after the marathon and seeing so many girls who once said that they had never run five kilometres, let alone 10, and actually completed it, and completed it to a really high standard,” he said.
"Motivation is a massive part with training in a group, you hear a lot of excuses from people these days for not exercising, and training with a group of people for that motivation is huge." Group member Jacqui Ware said she had been training with John for two and a half years.
“Getting my fitness back and feeling healthy has been the most rewarding part of joining Fitness in Numbers,” she said.
“I’m committed to exercise now, it’s not such a chore anymore and I really enjoy it.” Mr Poloson said he would help interested group members train for the 21.1 kilometre half marathon.
“It was beyond my wildest dreams, seeing 15 girls go out and achieve what they did, it was absolutely amazing, I couldn’t have hoped for anything more,” he said.
“I know some of them now have decided to go in the half marathon next year and that’s very satisfying in my eyes, they should be very proud of themselves.” For more information, contact John Polson at john@fitnessinnumbers.com
