A Burleigh Waters resident who fell flat on his back during an audition for Australia’s Got Talent earlier this year turned his misfortune around and made the cut to secure his place on the television show.
Andrew Wong said when he first heard about Australia’s Got Talent he was hesitant to try out because he didn’t believe he was talented.
Mr Wong said he was bullied as a child so decided to start taking martial arts classes to learn self defence.
“It was my child hood dream to become a famous martial arts action movie star,” he said.
“Then after watching the first season, and seeing what this show was about ... I thought I might give it a go, what was there to lose.”
Mr Wong then unsuccessfully auditioned for the second and third season before getting making it through during the fourth proving the third time to be charm.
However, despite making it through the audition process for the fourth season, Mr Wong said it did not run smoothly.
“I went in there with a very serious attitude, then Kyle [Sandilands] sought of pulled a hat trick on me and got me to kick a microphone above my head, that’s when I fell, in front of everyone and they all just cracked up laughing,” he said.
Mr Wong said the producers decided to give him a chance on the show and take advantage of his comical misfortune.
“I just went with that ... if the audience and the executive producers like the comic side of martial arts then I’ll go with it,” said Mr Wong.
Director of Williams Talent in Varsity Lakes Gael McDonald said while she didn’t see Mr Wong’s audition she thought some people could make the best out of any situation.
People also often enjoy the limelight, she said.
“If they’re on there for a funny reason as oppose to a real reason they still get a kick out of it,” she said.
Andrew Wong was voted out after the second round and said he has already auditioned for the X-Factor and was waiting to hear the results.
