Varsity lakes residents said they were saddened by the devastation caused by the earthquake that hit Indonesia last Thursday.
Two earthquakes hit the region destroying the many villages and homes. Varsity lakes resident Margret Wright said she was proud of the Australian Government’s fast response in the region and thought it wouldn’t be long for local fundraising efforts began.
“I would suggest that the local banks should start some sort of fundraising, even if it was a small box to put money in,” said Mrs Wright.
Founder of the International Indonesian Group in the Gold Coast Vera Kos said she had experienced firsthand the impact of such disasters and lost her parents in the 2004 tsunami.
Ms Vera Kos said if people wished to make a donation they should do this with a reputable organisation.
The earthquake struck Sumatran City of Padang and nearby towns the west and measured 7.6 on the Richter scale.
THE WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN reports that 1100 people are feared dead with hundreds still trapped.
