Division 11 Candidate makes ground with campaign

Martyn Shedd – the new candidate in the race for Division 11 – kicked off his campaign trail last weekend at the new Varsity Lakes Community Sports House with the launch of 'paddle4fresh’.

Martyn challenged himself and members of the electorate to head down to Lake Orr on Saturday 10 December to paddle and raise funds for local non-for-profit organisation Varsity Lakes Community Limited (VLCL).

Martyn’s first campaign event proved to be a great success, with more than 20 paddlers turning up in a range of craft. Despite the on-and-off weather conditions, the participants, including Martyn, paddled a combined 55 laps, raising $550 for VLCL.

Varsity Lakes based architectural firm degenhartSHEDD, who designed the Sports House, sponsored the event and donated $10 to VLCL for every 5km circuit completed.

Martyn thanked the Varsity Lakes Paddle Club for their support of VLCL in providing craft and in participating in the fund raising efforts.

Having finally found a home at Sports House, the Paddle Club can expect to expand their membership over time as more and more of the local community look to enjoy the facilities the site has to offer.

“It was a great afternoon, we paddled a total of 275 kilometres, though I only managed 10 of them, there were some heroic efforts made by members of the Paddlers Club to ensure we exceeded the $500 goal. It was good to meet not only those game for a paddle but also other members of the electorate who are interested in a change at Council,” Mr Shedd said.

“Hopefully they came away with the understanding that I am a credible alternative for the role as the local Councillor, and will spread the word.”

If you missed the chance to support Martyn on Saturday, there is no need to fret as the next campaign event – ‘swim4fresh’ – will be held on 7 January at 1:30PM at the Bond University swimming pool. Funds raised will be donated to the Bond Children’s Holiday Camp.
