Crows create a stink

By Fahad Al Sharif and Leo Balboni, Bond University journalism students

ABOUT 70 crows in and around Market Square have residents annoyed with the council's neglect of about 30 rubbish bins.

The crows have become a nuisance within the area, which are constantly rummaging through the exposed bins, littering garbage throughout the streets and natural waterways in the neighbouring and surrounding areas.

Resident Patrick Rabbath said he was surprised that there had not been any legal action taken to minimise the distressful and psychological impact this is having on local residents.

“We need the urgent intervention of an environmental health officer who could survey the damaging effect the exposed bins in Varsity Lakes are having on people’s wellbeing and the environment,” he said.

University of New England Postdoctoral Fellow Dr Stephen Debus said the increase of this incident affects the small native birds that are already struggling in human-altered environments as well as causing sleep deprivation associated with large noisy crow roosts at dawn.

“Yes I think that human rubbish has a lot to do with it,” he said.
Gold Coast City Council and local councillor Jan Grew were unavailable to comment on the subject.
