Crime Rise Taken Seriously

(By Kate Murray and Dugald McGinness - Bond University Journalism Students)

A recent vox pop revealed 12 out of 15 Varsity Lakes residents were concerned for their safety when walking around the neighbourhood at night after recent reports of an increased level in crime in the area.

Robina Police Station Senior Sergeant Andrew Frick reported a 15 year-old male has been arrested for three of the robberies in the area to a number of media outlets including Varsity Lakes Online.

Varsity Lakes resident and Bond University student Bernie Nagan said he was becoming increasingly anxious about walking back from university at night.

“My neighbour was targeted by young males around 9pm on her way back from Market Square,” he said.

Mr Nagan said his neighbour was confronted by a group of males but ran off and was not harmed.

“I have made a conscious effort to be home before dark as I rely on walking for transport.”

Varsity Lakes resident Bryan Coleman said he was aware of the rise in crime reportedly in the area.

“I have noticed the increased concern of thieves as there has been a spotlight on crime in local media,” he said.

Mr Coleman said he was taking precautions to secure his apartment and belongings.

“I removed my bike from the balcony as it was in view from the street and this may tempt robbers to my apartment,” he said.
