Community group brings Christmas to town

By Maddison Hawkins, Bond University journalism student

Christmas will come early to Varsity Lakes with the star-studded Christmas Carols in the Park on December 4.

Organisers are expecting crowds of over 4000 to descend upon Central Park for a night of family Christmas activities.

The event is supported by Varsity Lakes Community Limited, Hope Church and the Hear And Say Centre, along with numerous corporate sponsors.

The night will begin with a free family fun fair, before famous faces such as Bree de Rome from Australia’s Got Talent take to the stage at 6pm.

Katharine Di Pompo, Events Co-ordinator at the Varsity Lakes Community Limited, said it was a coup to have such high quality performers at the event.

“We’ve been working on the preparations since February; it’s quite a large scale event,” she said.
Entertainment for the night will include performances from Australian Idol finalist Stu Campbell, the Varsity College choir and the choir from Hope Church.

Pastor Ric Kelson, the convenor of the choir from Hope Church, said audiences could look forward to some familiar carols.

“There’ll be traditional carols with a modern feel,” he said.

“The carols are so important because the community associates Christmas with spirituality, family, Santa. It makes people feel good and it connects the community.”

The event, in its seventh year, will include a new ‘Come and Try’ component with members from the Gold Coast Titans, St George Queensland Reds and Queensland Cricket encouraging the young members of the community to be active.

Pastor Justin Reid, a member of the Carols committee from Hope Church, said that the event had grown through the years.

“It’s definitely worth it for the smiles on the kids’ faces, the reactions from their families,’ he said.

“It also inspires people to volunteer in our community.”

The night will end with a free fireworks display for the community.
