A letter from Danielle...
My name is Danielle Baillie,
I am currently undertaking a double degree; a Bachelor of Human Services in Child and Family Studies and a Bachelor of Education Primary at Griffith University.
During the 2007 University winter break I ventured over to Kenya to volunteer at Mission in Action Nakuru Baby Orphanage. To date it has been the most memorable experience of my life. At the orphanage I was fortunate enough to help build a playground for the children. The excitement from the children was overwhelming, as we cemented the pavement to create a bike path. To see children who have had such a hard start at life, standing there before me, bouncing with excitement, huge smiles on their faces; it is a moment that has stayed with me forever.
Volunteering in Kenya truly opened my eyes to a world I realised I knew very little about. The level of poverty and disease made me truly realise how fortunate we are to live in Australia and how important it is to open your heart and give to those who are not as fortunate.
Due to my deep love for Kenya, I have decided to spend the summer holidays volunteering at another orphanage in Kenya. Whilst I ventured to Kenya on my own last year, this time I am going with a Mission group (Caring Hands In Kenya). During our time in Kenya we are going to be living at The Fewago Mission orphanage while also helping out the local community. We plan to renovate the children’s ward at the hospital and the maternity ward by painting the walls, tiling the floors, putting in fly screens, purchasing new mattresses and new sinks.
The Fewago Mission orphanage does not receive much funding so there is not enough bedding for all the children. This is the reason I am writing to you, I am asking for monetary donations to contribute to the purchasing of bedding for the orphanage. My hope is to reach $10,000, as this would ensure all 120 children would have a bed to sleep in at night. Currently, around 5-7 children are sharing a single bed while the others sleep on the floor. Please know that all contributions you make will positively impact our mission. And you can take pride in being a good corporate citizen.
On the 21st of November 2008, Cocktails and Dreams Nightclub will be holding a fundraising event for Caring Hands in Kenya. All sponsorships will be recognized on the night. If your business is unable to donate monetary funds, goods that can be put into a raffle that will be drawn on the night would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of our request especially in the currently tough economic conditions.
And thank you for your time; the future is in our hands and I believe that with one step at a time we can make a positive difference.
Kind Regards,
Danielle Baillie |
